Hypnosis: Evidence Based Treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Title: Hypnosis: Evidence Based Treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Key concept: Post-Traumatic Stress disorder has been a highly misunderstood and misdiagnosed condition for millennia; accounts of which can be found as far in the past as Homer’s Iliad. However, recent peer-reviewed, empirical research has shown hypnosis to be a highly effective therapeutic intervention in the treatment of this insidious and often debilitating disorder. This presentation will introduce and define the concepts of PTSD and Hypnosis, review a meta-analysis of the empirical, peer-reviewed research regarding hypnosis as a first-line treatment for PTSD, and present ‘live’ demonstrations of the techniques research indicates to be most efficacious.
Additionally, Richard Dama is a combat veteran of 5 combat zones, He has a unique insight into this disorder, both as a former sufferer and as a Licensed Mental Health Therapist dealing with PTSD on a daily basis in his private practice and as the Director of a large juvenile detention and treatment facility.
Application: At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to:
1. Define and describe Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
2. Define and describe the phenomenon and process of Hypnosis.
3. Discuss the recent empirical, peer-reviewed data regarding Hypnosis a treatment for PTSD.
4. Describe/demonstrate hypnotherapeutic interventions with PTSD.
